The economics of algal biofuels is critically dependent on productivity, and one can apply the same criterion and ask the question: among the microalgae, are certain classes more productive? Before answering that question, we need to acknowledge that within a given class of algae, there will be differences in measured productivity values when comparing individual species. These differences can stem from intrinsic factors related to their cell biology or from growth conditions at the time of sampling, which can involve both environmental and ecological variables. Comparing productivity in controlled culture conditions has value, because it reflects what is possible, but it also encompasses biases due to the fact that conditions are never exactly the same in two culture systems. Indications are that algal biofuels will be developed on a regional basis in a wide variety of environments [1]. Another consideration is the utility of comparing maximum productivity values. In a production system operating for a good portion of the year, it would be far more desirable to have strains that are consistently productive under a variety of environmental conditions than strains that have higher productivity under optimal conditions for a shorter period of time. A final consideration in productivity comparisons is that if the number of studies is relatively small, which is usually the case, poor statistical comparisons result. An alternative to measuring productivity values in culture is to evaluate an algal class’ productivity on the basis of its abundance in nature in a variety of environments. This approach may directly relate to biofuel production systems that would be deployed in different environments and provide robust statistics, since the sample size is large. Diatoms (Figure 1) are among the most productive and environmentally flexible eukaryotic microalgae on the planet. They are estimated to be responsible for 20% of global carbon fixation and have become the dominant primary producers in the ocean [2,3]. In addition The place of diatoms in the biofuels industry

The Viability of Biofuels in Developing Countries: Successes, Failures, and Challenges
In the last few decades, finding alternatives to fossil fuels has become a hot issue across all international frontiers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shed light on the feasibility of using biofuels to meet the growing energy demand as well as to reduce CO2 emissions which are a major cause of global warming, especially in the transportation sector. The...
متن کاملProspects for commercial production of diatoms
In this review, a simple procedure that portends the open-pond growth of commercially viable diatoms is discussed. We examined a number of topics relevant to the production and harvesting of diatoms as well as topics concerning the production of bioproducts from diatoms. Among the former topics, we show that it is currently possible to continuously grow diatoms and control the presence of invas...

The present study explores some physical and chemical parameters in the epilithic diatoms in the water samples obtained from two stations in Koçan Falls, Erzincan from March to November 2014. Over the course of the study, 19 taxa of epilithic diatoms were recorded. Diatom genera which had the highest number of species in the study period were Cymbella (4 species), Navicula (4 species), and Cycl...

In this study, diatoms in epipsammic samples, which were taken from two stations selected in Kelkit Creek (Tokat/Turkey) between March and December 2018, were analyzed. During the study, a total of 25 taxa belonging to diatoms were recorded. The diatom species represented by the highest number of taxa were Cymbela (4 taxa), Nitzschia (4 taxa), and Navicula (3 taxa). متن کاملPotential of lipid metabolism in marine diatoms for biofuel production
BACKGROUND Diatoms are an ecologically relevant group of microalgae that are not commonly considered for bio-oil production even if they are responsible for massive blooms at sea. Seventeen diatom species were screened for their capacity to produce biomass and lipids, in relation to their growth rate. Triglyceride levels were also assessed as a preferential source of biofuels. RESULTS Using s...
